A total of 10 applications have been recognized as winners among more than 70 submitted by Ukrainian media newsrooms to receive a laptop from the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) and its partner – Ukrainian Media Fund.
In the opinion of the expert commission of the NUJU, colleagues from the Sumy Region, Donetsk Region, Kharkiv Region, Bucha Town, Chernivtsi City, Lutsk City, Rivne Region, and the Chernihiv Region were able to tell the most convincingly in their application about the economic sustainability of their media and vision of its prospects.
The list of winners includes:
- the Druzhkivka na Doloniakh newspaper (Donetsk Region),
- the Peremoha newspaper (Sumy Region),
- the Pohliad online publication (Bucha, Kyiv Region),
- the Zhyttia Semenivshchyny newspaper (Chernihiv Region),
- the Volodymyretsky Visnyk newspaper (Rivne Region),
- the Visti newspaper (Donetsk Region),
- the Putyvlski Vidomosti newspaper (Sumy Region),
- the A.S.S. [ACC] online publication (Chernivtsi),
- the Zorya newspaper (Zolochiv, Kharkiv Region),
- the in.ua network of hyperlocal online media (Lutsk).
The winners will receive the equipment via the network of Journalists’ Solidarity Centers (JSC) of the NUJU or via the Nova Poshta private postal service by approximately mid-August.
For the sake of transparency and impartiality in the selection of equipment recipients, the Union makes this process open and public. In particular, the expert commission included unrelated and disinterested colleagues; information about each equipment recipient will be published on Union‘s resources.
The final list was selected in several stages by an expert commission, which included:
– Vitalii Holubev, the secretary of the NUJU for educational activities, media coach, founder of the Universal Journalist School and the All-Ukrainian contest I Am A Journalist!;
– Ivanna Rudyshyn, the head of the non-governmental organization Information As It Is, an NUJU member;
– Serhii Huz, a member of the Journalistic Ethics Commission, Ukrainian expert of the Justice for Journalists foundation (London);
– Ivan Harahonych, the editor-in-chief of the Panorama Mukacheva online publication;
– Iryna Khromenko, the coordinator of NUJU projects.
Lina Kushch, the NUJU First Secretary, provided important expert assistance in the selection process.
“We sincerely hope that the provided equipment will contribute to increasing the economic sustainability of your media in wartime conditions, allow you to preserve your readership, and introduce new promising projects,” emphasizes Sergiy Tomilenko, the President of the NUJU.
At the same time, the Union emphasizes that it was not possible to satisfy the requests of all editors who make a worthy contribution to the development of Ukrainian journalism and deserve support. At least seven editors applied for each laptop. In addition, the commission could not ignore the regional aspect, which was also not easy. On the one hand, the final list of winners was supposed to represent all of Ukraine, from west to east. On the other hand, the increased attention of the commission to the needs of newsrooms from front-line, de-occupied, and border regions was logical and clear.
The most important thing is the content of tender applications, which the members of the expert commission carefully studied. Perhaps most of all, they paid attention to how detailed and convincingly one or another newsroom spoke about its vision of the state and prospects of media development and the sources of ensuring its economic stability, how well-founded the need to get a laptop seemed. After all, this competition was aimed at supporting the economic stability of the media and not at providing emergency aid, as, for example, in the case of grants from UNESCO and the International Federation of Journalists, which at the end of the year, the NUJU, based on the results of a similar competition, distributed among 160 colleagues from all regions of Ukraine. Therefore, the focus of the tender commission’s attention, in this case, was on how a newsroom ensures its economic stability in the current extremely challenging conditions and how it sees the prospects for further development, both in general and in the context of a specific competition.
At the same time, the members of the expert commission checked the reliability and relevance of the information provided in the application forms, additionally, if necessary, turned to the Internet resources of the relevant media, and took into account the absence of comments on violations of professional and ethical standards. The final list of winners was formed and approved by a unanimous decision of the commission based on the results of a comprehensive evaluation and selection based on all the above-mentioned criteria.
The NUJU is constantly searching for international donor support for Ukrainian journalists. The applications that did not pass the results of the current competition will remain in reserve for further attracting resources from the partners of the Union. In particular, in terms of projects with a different thematic focus: not economic stability assistance, but emergency assistance to newsrooms suffering certain difficulties. After all, the NUJU understands that for many media, this kind of support is the most relevant. At the same time, the Union will strengthen its work in the direction of supporting online media, in particular TV channels and online publications, because it is well aware of their importance in the modern information space.
The Union urges to monitor all possible assistance options for media appearing in the information space and continue to submit support requests. To be aware of the maximum number of opportunities, go to the Telegram channel of the NUJU Spilka News https://t.me/spilkanews.
