As of May 2023, Dmytro Khyliuk‘s parents have only one piece of information about their son. The 1+1 media group and UNIAN have called on the world community to release journalist Khyliuk from Russia’s captivity.

The 1+1 media group appeals to the international professional and the human rights communities with a request to facilitate the release from Russian captivity of UNIAN news agency journalist Dmytro Khyliuk, as well as all civilian hostages that the Russian Federation has been illegally holding since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine.

Dmytro Khyliuk, a journalist for the Ukrainian Independent Information Agency (UNIAN), which is part of the 1+1 media group and one of the most popular media platforms of UAnet, has been in Russian captivity for over a year. Dmytro and his father, Vasyl Khyliuk, were abducted by Russian security forces on March 3, 2022. Eight days later, the father was released from custody, but the journalist remained in captivity.

As of May 2023, Dmytro Khyliuk‘s parents have only one piece of information about their son – a laconic letter he wrote in one of the Russian prisons last April.

“The official status of Dmytro Khyliuk is a civilian hostage. According to international law, such people should be returned beyond special exchanges. In order not to harm the release process, during the year of the full-scale war, the relevant state structures recommended not making information about this case public, but currently, this data has become publicly available and open. We call on the world community to give this situation maximum publicity and do everything possible so that the aggressor country releases Dmytro Khyliuk and all the civilians Russia is still holding captive in inhumane conditions,” 1+1 media said.

The facts that confirm the abduction of Dmytro Khyliuk by Russian security forces on March 3, 2022, and his detention in a Russian prison near the Ukrainian border are given in the RSF investigation at this link. Details of Dmytro‘s capture are also posted in a UNIAN article at this link.

Dmytro‘s colleagues appeal to the representatives of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), the European and International Federations of Journalists, the European Commission, and personally to the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen with a request to help in the liberation of Dmytro Khyliuk and give this case the maximum publicity!

For its part, the National Union of Journalists of Ukraine (NUJU) calls on the state and all international institutions to do their best to as soon as possible return home all those who are unlawfully detained by Russia. Speaking on May 2 on the grounds of the UN General Assembly, NUJU President Sergiy Tomilenko emphasized that the Union demands that Russia release UNIAN journalist Dmytro Khyliuk, all illegally convicted Crimean Tatar journalists, and Vladyslav Yesypenko and Iryna Danylovych who were convicted in Crimea.
